Music

Alongside my visual art, am musician, percussionist and electronics artist. The emphasis is usually on experimentation and improvisation, always searching for new sounds, techniques, and collaborative scenarios to extend my practice.

Early Years & Instruments

Initially I played kit, starting in the sixties in rock and jazz on kit, but over the years this widened into the use of home-made instruments, often made from scrap, amplified objects and low-tech electronics as well as a slightly more conventional kit. I often integrate these elements.

An interest in playing gongs, bowls and various other metallophones has always been there. These are bought and home-made, again from found objects.

The emphasis is usually on experimentation and improvisation, always searching for new sounds, techniques, and collaborative scenarios to extend my practice. Stylistically my emphasis is best described as free improvisation and free jazz.

Performance & Collaborations

I have played with many of the leading free improvising musicians in the UK, too many to list, but many of you will know who I am referring to.

I have performed widely in the UK and in Germany, also gigs in Paris, Budapest, and Sarajevo.

Collaborations I have been with have been played on BBC Radio 3 and several radio stations in the UK and the USA.

"I am continuously looking for ways to link creativity in sound with my visual work. I see my musical creativity as painting in sound and this is where the love and significance of abstraction plays a vital role."

Mahood / BET4motion - Rubble extract

All music, images and video footage created by Walt Shaw and Graham Foster.

This is a short extract from Walt Shaw and Graham Foster's 62 minute sound and video work Rubble, commissioned for the Osnabruck Biennial exhibition and shown in the Kunsthalle Dominikankirche the Summer of 2006. Walt and Graham perform music / live performance gigs as Mahood and have used this work as the basis for a number of shows in the UK and Germany.

Alchemy/Schmalchemy

Manifestations in Manchester facilitated by Geoff Bright - Performance Bradford 2012

Geoff Bright, Walt Shaw and Gillian Whiteley operate with a set of practices and activities which play with the idea of alchemy and consciously parodying notions of authenticity and artifice – schmalchemy. The punning title – Alchemy/Schmalchemy delineates a disruptive oscillatory space of mischief in which the live performance operates. The group uses scientific apparatus and they adorn spaces with a range of objects and materials – bottles, coloured liquids, microscopes, pipes, mirrors, projections, from antique projection apparatus, pendulums etc. Acoustic musical instruments are combined with ramshackle low-tech sound-producing equipment: this might include an ancient harmonium (pedal-driven), an old mechanical gramophone alongside low-tech electronics. Soundworks produced have an emphasis on intensity, through highly focused and energised intention, which can build to quite 'electrical' levels and then in an instant dissipate, to be built up again in repeated cycles.
